Venus and the Tran Am Totem
5 hand embroidered pieces created for the very 'intimate space' show at Visual Space Gallery August, 2018
Curated by Barbara Cohen
Size of the 5 pieces: 8 X 11 inches
These hand-stitched pieces are a little comic excursion into far-flung but not farfetched sculptural equivalencies of the Venus de Milo and the Trans Am Totem. The Trans Am Totem is the outdoor sculpture by artist Marcus Bowcott on the boulevard near the main street Skytrain Station.
It’s the dynamic, spiralling, counter-pose creating the sense of perpetual ‘turning’ that moves me about these two (seemingly unrelated in time and style) pieces even as they are both the very apogee of stateliness and stasis; stitching as an expression of my love for these iconic sculptural masterpieces.
