This embroidery on a placemat done while riding the Toronto subway in the late 1970's is not really my first embroidery. But it was in a group of embroideries I did at that time where the embroidery was art making; looking for and using the materials ( tiny needle, tiny, tiny thread, woven cotton commercial placemat) to express an idea or concept. Not for function or decoration. The placemat was not useable for a placemat afterwards.
